Metaphor

Metaphor highlights our perception of something literal

  • ie . “The face of a mountain”
  • But also the inadequacy of metaphors
  • Ie. the beyond. beyond the metaphor lies the x
  • The x is reproduced, extended, or projected by the metaphor
  • It is not x itself. This is a second order
  • The x itself is not revealed to us because the second order is the only means by which we can ever comprehend or come to try to ses the first order of x
  • The scope of the metaphor limits the perception and depth of x
  • X is apparent to us insofar as we are individually apparent/opened to it.
  • We must expand ourselves to plunge into different modes of seeing
  • Thus, the origin of x is hard to traced
  • Any symbols of it are assimilated under the images of x, rather than x itself.
  • All is reduced to a second order–that is, to our thinking
  • Our thinking is thus, paradoxical. It both helps us to see but also restricts what we see.

Humans are always caught up in an artificial makeup of order

Reality is always beyond description or metaphor

Metaphor gives us a sense of the real at a remove
